Affordable and Fun Date Ideas

It is important to have quality time with the one you love. Doing so on a budget can sometimes be difficult but we have a list of budget-friendly date ideas that are creative and fun.

Picnic Date

Have a picnic in the park or your own backyard. For food, some inexpensive homemade food options are sandwiches, wraps, salads, finger foods, or muffins. Pack some juice boxes or thermoses of iced tea to drink. After you are done eating, you can go for a walk or play a game like frisbee.

Ocean Date

Head to the beach and enjoy the beautiful ocean as a background. Take some easy snacks like cut of fruit and veggies with dip or crackers with cheese that you can keep fresh in a cooler, as well as some homemade lemonade. Take a swim in the ocean, play some beach volleyball, or walk in the sand for a romantic date.

Cultural or Artistic Date

Check out a free museum or art gallery when they have free admission days. For example, all the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. are free every day although some special exhibits might charge a fee. There are also the Getty Center or the Broad, both in L.A., that have free admission. Meanwhile the Museum of Modern Art in New York has free admission every Friday from 4pm to 8pm.

Community Event or Festival Date

You may happen upon a street fair or cultural festival in your area. Eventbrite is a good website to look at for information on what kind of events are going on near where you live. During your date (depending on what kind of event you find), you could enjoy live music, food tastings, and cultural performances.

Cooking Date

For a cooking date, the idea is for the couple to cook something fun together that they can enjoy afterwards. It could be a whole meal, an appetizer, or a dessert. You could make it themed too- think homemade pizza night, pasta making night, burrito or taco bar, baked potato bar, or stir-fry night.

Outdoor Movie Night

Some cities have outdoor movie nights (where you set up a blanket or park your car and watch the movie) that are either free or really cheap during the summer. You could also set up a projector inside your own house and watch a movie on there.

Bike Ride or Hike Date

Go to a local bike trail or scenic walking path in your area so you have some one-on-one time and chat with your loved ones while you work up a sweat. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for the trip along with a fully charged phone just in case.

Dance Class or Workout Date

There are multiple dance classes out there as well as places you can go for just one session to work out. Research your local community centers or studios offering introductory or advanced classes in dance styles and fitness classes that you might be interested in trying.

Board Game or Card Game Date

If you want to host a game night with other couples that includes your favorite board games or card games, it could be lowkey and fun. It could be a classic game like Monopoly or a more modern game like Marvel Champions. Have some inexpensive snacks like some cut up veggies and dip or chips to complement the game.

Stargazing and Bonfire Night

If you have an indoor fireplace or a firepit near you, grab a bag of marshmallows, some chocolate, and graham crackers to make some smores. Then have a romantic evening looking at the stars.
